Lina’s success as a line dancing instructor and choreographer is a far cry from her early days growing up in Fujian, China. Born into a very traditional Chinese family, Lina’s exposure to dancing was limited only to school production, and her dream of training to become a career dancer after graduating from high school never materialized because of her move to Hong Kong with her family in 1962. Lina got married shortly afterwards and became so preoccupied with her husband’s family business that she had no time to think about dancing. Nevertheless, her passion for dancing had always remained in her heart, and in 1992 when she and her husband and two sons immigrated to New Zealand her childhood dream became reality. During her six years there she studied English for the first time, and jumped at the chance to enroll in ballroom and line dancing classes, both of which she excelled at.
Returning to Hong Kong in 1998, Lina started teaching a small group of friends to line dance, at a time when this activity was non-existent. This hobby soon became a full time commitment. Being the first line dancing instructor in Hong Kong, Lina translated this “new concept” into Chinese as well as much of the terminology commonly used in line dancing classes so that the “fun and friendship” associated with this activity can be spread throughout the community-at-large.
Lina’s contribution in line dancing is not only limited to Hong Kong. She is well experienced in leading students to workshops in Hawaii, Palm Springs, Blackpool, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Las Vegas, 1st Asia Line Dance Cruise and soon the 2010 WOW Line Dance Spectacular (September) in Shanghai, China. Lina has participated as workshop instructor in Hawaii, Malaysia, Las Vegas, 1st Asia Line Dance Cruise and will join the list of “celebrity” instructors to teach at 2010 WOW Line Dance Spectacular in Shanghai, China in September. Lina and her students have also competed at UCWDC events in Malaysia and Singapore, and have won many different categories of awards in Dance and Choreography. Lina has also served as a judge in the Malaysian Line Dancing Championships.
After teaching for 12 years, Lina still aims to make line dancing affordable and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of age, fitness level, nationality or socio-economic background. So what is her ultimate goal? To continue teaching and promoting all the fun and benefits of line dancing!
